If anyone embodies the archetype of the evil that was Auschwitz, it is surely Josef Mengele. Dubbed by the inmates, and survivors of the camp the “Angel of Death,” the immaculate doctor, with a slight flick of the finger, would casually select those permitted to live, and work, and those destined to die in the gas chambers. Among those he selected to live, were the subjects upon whom he conducted his infamous race-inspired medical experiments. His postwar escape to South America, and prolonged successful evasion from capture (in Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil) only reinforced the fear and mystique of the man.
Edward Colston was born 2 November in 1636 and died in 1721. A significant proportion of Colson’s wealth came directly or indirectly from the slave trade. It is estimated that during Colston’s involvement with the RAC, it transported over 100,000 African men, women and children, who were branded with the company’s initials on their chest. Over 19,000 of them died on their journey to the Caribbean and the rest of the Americas due to unhygienic conditions on the ships. Designed to maximise profit and hold as many enslaved people as possible, the boats were hotbeds for dysentery, dehydration and scurvy.

James, both king of Scotland and Stuart king of England before creating the kingdom of Great Britain, was born on 19 June 1566 in Edinburgh Castle. James married Anna, the sister of the Danish king, Christian IV. They had numerous children, three of whom survived infancy: Henry, who died after a short illness in 1612, Charles who was to succeed James, and Elizabeth, who married Frederick, elector of Palatine, and the swiftly deposed King of Bohemia.
