KOFI A. ANNAN of Ghana, the seventh Secretary-General of the United Nations, served from 1997 to 2006 and was the first to emerge from the ranks of United Nations staff. Dag Hjalmar Agne Carl Hammarskjöld was Secretary-General of the United Nations from 10 April 1953 until 18 September 1961 when he met his death in a plane accident while on a peace mission in the Congo. Perez de Cuellar was born in Lima, Peru, on 19 January 1920. He is a lawyer and a career diplomat, now retired. Javier Perez de Cuellar assumed office as Secretary-General of the United Nations on 1 January 1982. Ban Ki-moon, born 13 June 1944, was the eighth Secretary-General of the United Nations. He has sought to be a bridge-builder, to give voice to the world’s poorest and most vulnerable people, and to strengthen the Organization itself. Mr. Ban held office from on 1 January 2007 to 31 December 2016.
