Khofifah Indar Pawaransa, Minister of Social Affairs under President Joko Widodo. Born in Surabaya on May 19, 1965, Khofifah a Muslim activist in the largest Islamic organisation in the country, the Nahdlatul Ulama. She earned her Master’s degree in society and politics from the University of Indonesia.
Khofifah Indar Parawansa began to seize the spotlight on the country’s political stage after her figure appeared reading a speech on the statement of the position of the United Development Faction (F-PP) at the 1998 MPR General Session.
Of course the many highlights of the political lights are not without reason. The speech of the politician born in 1965 was the first critical speech to the implementation of the New Order in the national formal event at the level of the MPR General Session.
Inevitably, almost all members of the People’s Consultative Assembly, at that time dominated by the Development Development Faction (Golkar), the ABRI faction and the faction of the Group of Representatives, were shocked by the speech that struck the heart of the New Order rulers.
Not only criticism, activists of this organization also conveyed various shortcomings, and cheating, the 1997 Election while completing speeches with various ideas about democracy.
Courage, as well as intelligence, Pariwansa in presenting criticism of the implementation of the New Order regime which was in power while making her figure as a respected politician in the country. In 1992, the mother of four children was elected as a member of the Indonesian House of Representatives from the United Development Party (PPP) in the period 1992 – 1998.
However, changes to the political map after the fall of the New Order regime made her leave PPP and moved to the National Awakening Party (PKB).
In the period 1998-2000, politicians who had aspired to become drivers were again seated in the DPR as representatives of the PKB. This alumni of the FISIP UI Postgraduate program again showed his work after being appointed as Minister of Women’s Empowerment during the reign of President K. H. Abdurrahman Wahid aka Gus Dur.
In early 2013, the name of the former Head of the BKKBN from 1999 to 2001 re-emerged in the Indonesian national political arena while advancing in the election of the East Java Governor for the 2014-2019 period.
For now, Khofifah Indar Parawansa serves as the State Minister for Women’s Empowerment in the National Unity Cabinet.

She was married to Indar Parawansa (also rendered as Parawangsa), also known by the name Daeng Beta (born on 26 July 1960 in Palu, Sulawesi). Khofifah has four children, a daughter and three sons: called Fatimahsang Mannagalli Parawansa, Jalaluddin Mannagalli Parawansa, Yusuf Mannagalli Parawansa and Ali Mannagalli Parawansa.
