Pol Pot (Saloth Sar, better known by his nom de guerre Pol Pot) was born Saloth Sar on May 19, 1925, in Kompong Thom Province, Cambodia. He rose to power as leader of the Khmer Rouge, Cambodia’s Communist regime. During its reign, which ended in 1979, Pol Pot oversaw the deaths of an estimated one to two million people from starvation, overwork or execution. Nuon Chea (Lao Kim Lorn), born 7 July 1926, Voat Kor village, Battambang province, to a corn farmer and a seamstress, Nuon Chea was second in command to Pol Pot. He studied law at Bangkok’s prestigious Thammasat University, where he became a member of the Thai Communist Party.
