General TY Danjuma GCON (Rtd) (Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma), born 9 December 1938, had a 19 year illustrious career in the Nigerian Army where he rose to the rank of Lieutenant General and served as Chief of Army Staff, he retired from the Nigerian Army in 1979 aged 40. Following his retirement from the army, General Danjuma embarked on a business career, he has become a distinguished and highly successful businessman with over 35 years experience.
General TY Danjuma is the founder of many Nigerian companies including the NAL-Comet Group, one of the most successful indigenous shipping agencies and terminal operators in Nigeria and South Atlantic Petroleum Limited an oil exploration and production company. In 2008 General Danjuma set up the TY Danjuma Foundation, a private independent grant making philanthropic organisation based in Abuja, Nigeria to aid the less fortunate in Nigeria.

General Danjuma sits on the board of several publicly quoted and privately owned companies in Nigeria encompassing all sectors of the economy. General TY Danjuma is a strong supporter of democracy in Nigeria. When Nigeria returned to democracy in 1999, General Danjuma accepted an appointment as Minister of Defence to President Olusegun Obasanjo’s Cabinet (1999 – 2003). This is the only government position General Danjuma has ever held. In 2010, Danjuma accepted a purely advisory appointment as the Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Council by the then acting President Goodluck Jonathan during prevailing difficulties between March and May of that year.
General Danjuma’s national honour as Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger, GCON, is the highest award given in Nigeria to a non-head of state. He also has several other national and international awards and titles, as well as honorary doctorate degrees from notable Nigerian and foreign Universities.

General TY Danjuma, GCON (Rtd.) has been recognised as the Leadership Person of the Year for 2011 by the Leadership Board of Editors in Nigeria. In 2013, The Emir of Zazzau, Alhaji (Dr.) Shehu Idris CFR, conferred the highly esteemed title of Jarmai Zazzau on General Danjuma. In 2014, General Danjuma served as a Chairman of the Victims’ Support Fund Committee supporting the victims of terror such as the Chibok schoolgirls kidnapping. In 2015, General Danjuma was conferred with “Champion for the Conservation of Biodiversity” award by the current president Muhammadu Buhari GCFR. More recently, General Danjuma was appointed as a Chairman of the Committee to rehabilitate infrastructure and resettle Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs in the North-East sub-region of Nigeria.
General T Y Danjuma is also a philanthropist. He has a solid track record of philanthropic giving, which culminated in the establishment of the TY Danjuma Foundation.
TY Danjuma Foundation
TY Danjuma Foundation is a private independent Nigerian philanthropic organisation committed to improving the quality of life of Nigerians, by supporting primarily health and education interventions implemented by Not-for-profit, Non-governmental Organisations (NGOs) registered and working in Nigeria.
The Foundation was established in 2009 by Lt. Gen. Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma, GCON – a retired Nigerian Army Chief of Staff, and an astute and successful businessman. In 2010 The Foundation became fully operational and has continued to make grants.
TY Danjuma Foundation works mainly through Non Governmental Organisations and Community Based groups in Nigeria. Our strategy of working through partnerships is intended to build institutional capacity of groups, supporting innovation and ensuring that the funding provided meets the needs of the target beneficiaries and is culturally relevant. In doing so, the Foundation encourages its grantees to forge collaborations and partnerships with local, state and national government agencies to enhance sustainability of the projects.
The Foundation also seeks collaboration with other grant makers and international agencies working in its target areas. Where necessary, the Foundation will leverage additional funding from other sources to support partners’ initiatives.
An important component of the Foundation’s work is the dedication to documenting and analysing the projects we fund to assist in strengthening our future grantmaking and contribute in influencing policies and practice in the areas we operate.
The Foundation is aware of important actors and individuals working actively in our focus areas and we employ networking and partnership building as tools to expand our reach. We work towards establishing a wide array of collaborative relationships aimed at leveraging additional human and material resources to maximise our impact.
Theophilus Danjuma Retires, Daisy Danjuma Takes Over As May & Baker Plc Chairman
2019, Daisy Danjuma, a former senator, has been announced as the new chairman of May & Baker Plc. According to a notice sent to the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE), the 67-year-old trained lawyer’s appointment was effective on September 27 when Theophilus Danjuma, her husband and former minister of defence, retired.
TY Danjuma, as he is popularly referred to, retired at the company’s board meeting that held on September 27. He joined the company’s board in 2003.
