Vanessa Bryant Biography and Profile

Vanessa Laine was born on May 5, 1982 in Los Angeles. Vanessa Bryant and Kobe Bryant married on April 18, 2001, at St Edward the Confessor Catholic Church in Dana Point, California. Many people didn’t even believe Laine was really dating the NBA star. After all the Marina High School in Huntington Beach student led a pretty sheltered life as a Latina teen growing up in Orange County and Bryant traveled in celebrity circles, having taken singer Brandy to prom.

“She said, ‘Guess who I met and guess who called me — Kobe Bryant!’ ” her stepcousin Laila Laine told the Los Angeles Times in 2005. “I said, ‘Sure. Have another drink.’

But for Bryant and Laine sparks flew after they met when she had a stint as a music video extra and he was on set having decided to launch a side career as a rapper. He began sending her massive bunches of roses at school and picking her up from there in his Mercedes Benz. They were soon engaged and the attention that garnered became so much that she reportedly had to finish her senior year via independent study.

The couple married in April 2001 at St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church in Dana Point, California, and Kobe Bryant’s family was reportedly less than happy. The family became estranged and his father Joe reportedly said at the time “Once he decided to get married, it’s his life now.”

Vanessa Bryant was quickly given a crash course in being the wife of a star NBA athlete which includes a sisterhood of fellow NBA wives, wealth and plenty of media scrutiny.

“I remember at one point she had this sort of identity crisis,” Laila Laine said in 2005. “She told me she was starting not to know who she was anymore, other than the wife of Kobe Bryant.”

Vanessa Bryant Problems and Challenges

Vanessa Bryant and Kobe Bryant went on to have their second daughter, Gianna in 2006. On December 16, 2011, Vanessa filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences, and the couple requested joint custody of their daughters. She was expected to receive half of Kobe’s $150million fortune, but the couple patched things up and called off the divorce in 2013, before welcoming another daughter, Bianka in 2016. Three years earlier, the same year that their first daughter Natalia was born, the couple’s relationship had hit the rocks when Kobe was arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting a 19-year-old in a hotel in Colorado. He said it was consensual, appearing at a press conference with his wife to admit to adultery.

The tearful star told his wife: “You’re my backbone. You’re a blessing. You’re a piece of my heart. You’re the air I breathe.”

He added: “And you’re the strongest person I know, and I’m so sorry for having to put you through this and having to put our family through this.”

The accuser later dropped all charges.

Then in 2005 the couple experienced tragedy when Vanessa suffered a devastating miscarriage due to an ectopic pregnancy.

He later blamed the stress he had put her through for the loss of the baby.

Speaking in the Showtime documentary, Kobe Bryant’s Muse he said of the miscarriage: “We should be building our family. But because of my mistake, because of this tough year, we lost a baby.”

Kobe Bryant and Gianna Death

Vanessa Bryant (Vanessa Urbieta Cornejo Laine) was not on board the helicopter when it came down, and is believed to have been at home at the time of the tragic crash. Kobe and Gianna, herself a promising basketball player, were on their way to the Mamba Academy for basketball practice when the chopper crashed at around 10am – in conditions that had forced the LAPD to ground their own helicopters. The seven other people on board were also killed.

The pilot – named locally as Ara Zobayan – was trying to turn the aircraft when it smashed into hills of Las Virgenes Canyon, which is home to celebrities including the Kardashians. Orange Coast College baseball coach John Altobelli, his wife Kerry, and their daughter Alyssa were also among the dead. Other victims were Christina Mauser, Bryant’s assistant coach in youth basketball, along with Sarah Chester and her daughter Payton, who was reportedly a teammate of Gianna.

Vanessa Bryant made her Instagram page public for the first time since his death on January 30. In her tribute to her late husband Vanessa, thanked people for their support, love and prayers.

Vanessa Bryant said: ” We are completely devastated by the sudden loss of my adoring husband, Kobe – the amazing father of our children; and my beautiful, sweet Gianna – a loving, thoughtful and wonderful daughter, and amazing sister to Natalia, Bianka and Capri.”

Infinity plus 1. #2 #Mambacita #GigiBryant.’

“She can hardly keep it together,” a family insider told PEOPLE magazine. “She can’t finish a sentence without crying. But she is working very hard to pull it together for the other girls. She now has to be the strong one.

“Of course, you can never be prepared for this. Despite their ups and downs, (Vanessa and Kobe) were soulmates. She thought of him as her partner for life.”

Vanessa’s first public acknowledgment of the tragedy came three days later when she changed the profile picture on her Instagram account to a heartbreaking image of Kobe and Gianna staring lovingly into each other’s eyes at an NBA All-Star game.

Vanessa Bryant posted an emotional tribute on Instagram

My girls and I want to thank the millions of people who’ve shown support and love during this horrific time. Thank you for all the prayers. We definitely need them. We are completely devastated by the sudden loss of my adoring husband, Kobe — the amazing father of our children; and my beautiful, sweet Gianna — a loving, thoughtful, and wonderful daughter, and amazing sister to Natalia, Bianka, and Capri.

We are also devastated for the families who lost their loved ones on Sunday, and we share in their grief intimately. There aren’t enough words to describe our pain right now. I take comfort in knowing that Kobe and Gigi both knew that they were so deeply loved. We were so incredibly blessed to have them in our lives. I wish they were here with us forever.

They were our beautiful blessings taken from us too soon. I’m not sure what our lives hold beyond today, and it’s impossible to imagine life without them. But we wake up each day, trying to keep pushing because Kobe, and our baby girl, Gigi, are shining on us to light the way. Our love for them is endless — and that’s to say, immeasurable. I just wish I could hug them, kiss them and bless them. Have them here with us, forever. Thank you for sharing your joy, your grief and your support with us.

We ask that you grant us the respect and privacy we will need to navigate this new reality. To honor our Team Mamba family, the Mamba Sports Foundation has set up the MambaOnThree Fund to help support the other families affected by this tragedy.

To donate, please go to MambaOnThree.org. To further Kobe and Gianna’s legacy in youth sports, please visit MambaSportsFoundation.org. Thank you so much for lifting us up in your prayers, and for loving Kobe, Gigi, Natalia, Bianka, Capri and me. #Mamba #Mambacita #GirlsDad #DaddysGirls #Family.
